Pour Over Thursdays is our weekly devotional: one cup of coffee, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Read it alone with your morning cup, or out loud with whoever is at your table.
The Pour
Before you read another word, pour the cup. Let it warm your hands. Because the story we are starting with today begins the way we hope every Thursday begins for you: with a table, some food, and room for people who did not expect to be invited.
The Passage
Luke 5:29-32. Levi the tax collector throws a great banquet for Jesus, and the religious leaders demand to know why He eats with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus answers that it is the sick who need a physician, and that He came to call sinners.
The Devotion
Notice what Jesus did not do when He called Levi. He did not hand him a scroll of corrections. He did not schedule a probationary period. He said follow Me, and then He sat down at Levi's table and ate Levi's food with Levi's friends, the exact people polite religion crossed the street to avoid.
This was not a one-time publicity move. It was the pattern of His whole ministry. When God wanted to change people, He ate with them. The grumblers in this story understood something we sometimes forget: in that culture, sharing a table meant sharing life. To eat with someone was to say, I am not ashamed of you. Which is exactly what Jesus was saying, and exactly why it scandalized the people keeping score.
Here is the part that should steady you today: you were on the guest list of that banquet. Not the version of you that has it together. The real one. Jesus did not come for the well-polished. He came for the sick, the tired, the behind, the ashamed. The Physician makes house calls, and He prefers to make them over dinner.
So this series starts here, with the claim that will hold up all fifty-two weeks: the table is where Jesus does His best work. Fifty-one Thursdays from now, we hope your table has become one of the places He does it.
