The Ones Who Can't Repay | Pour Over Thursdays No. 10

Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 10.

The Pour

Last week Jesus talked to the guests about where to sit. This week He turns to the host, and what He says would empty most of our guest lists.

The Passage

Luke 14:12-14. Jesus tells His host: when you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your relatives, or rich neighbors, lest they invite you back and you be repaid. Instead invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

The Devotion

Be honest about how invitations usually work. We host the people who host us. We remember who remembered us. Reciprocity is the quiet engine of most social life, and there is nothing evil about dinner with friends. But Jesus names what that system can never produce: blessing. When every meal is a transaction, hospitality becomes a closed loop of people who were already fine.

His alternative is almost comically direct. Invite the ones who cannot pay you back. Not as a project or a photo opportunity, but as guests, at your table, eating your food. The blessing, He says, is precisely in the impossibility of repayment, because a gift that cannot return to you has nowhere to go but up. God Himself takes over the accounting, payable at the resurrection.

And of course, this is not just instruction. It is autobiography. Every one of us sits at God's table as the guest who could not repay. The invitation we extend to people with nothing to offer is simply the invitation we received, passed down the table. Hospitality without a ledger is not charity. It is family resemblance.

Table Questions

  • Who do we naturally leave off our guest lists?
  • Why is hospitality with no payback so rare?
  • What is one concrete invitation you could make this month?

The Last Sip

The best seat you will ever fill is the one you gave away. Tear up the ledger.
