The Great Banquet | Pour Over Thursdays No. 11

Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 11.

The Pour

Someone at the dinner Jesus was attending raised a toast to the great feast of God's kingdom. Jesus answered with a story about people who RSVP'd yes and never came.

The Passage

Luke 14:15-24. A man prepares a great banquet and invites many. When it is ready, every guest begs off: a field to inspect, oxen to try out, a new wife. The angered host sends his servant into the streets to bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame, and when there is still room, out to the highways and hedges, so that his house may be filled.

The Devotion

Look closely at the excuses, because they are devastatingly reasonable. Nobody in the parable skips the banquet for something evil. A field is an investment. Oxen are a livelihood. Marriage is a gift from God Himself. The kingdom's fiercest competition has never been sin that looks like sin. It is good things granted veto power over the best thing.

And every excuse assumes the same lie: the invitation will keep. I can inspect the field now and feast later. But the parable's quiet terror is that the door does eventually close, not because the host stopped being generous, but because the feast happened, and they were elsewhere.

Then the story turns gloriously loud. The host is not humiliated into canceling. He widens the list. The banquet hall fills with people who never expected to smell that food, gathered in from lanes and hedgerows, and the servant keeps hearing the same instruction: there is still room. That line is still true. Whatever else this parable says about the people who would not come, it says this about God: His answer to refusal is a bigger invitation, and His house will be full.

Table Questions

  • What excuses keep people from God's invitation today?
  • What excuses have you made yourself?
  • Who in your life still needs to hear there is room?

The Last Sip

The feast is real, the door is open, and there is still room. Tell somebody.
