A Table Before My Enemies | Pour Over Thursdays No. 12

Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 12.

The Pour

We take one week in this arc to go back before Bethlehem, to a shepherd's psalm Jesus would have prayed His whole life, because it contains the strangest dinner setting in Scripture.

The Passage

Psalm 23:5. David writes to the Lord: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies" (NASB95). Oil anoints his head. His cup overflows.

The Devotion

Read the timing carefully, because it changes everything. The table is not set after the enemies are gone. It is set in their presence, in full view of everything that threatens David, while the trouble is still standing there. God's provision does not wait for the all-clear.

Most of us live as if peace is scheduled for later, after the diagnosis resolves, after the finances stabilize, after the conflict ends. Then we will rest. Then we will feast. David testifies to something better and stranger: a Shepherd who walks him through the darkest valley and then, surrounded by hostility, unhurriedly sets out a meal. Oil for his head. A cup poured past the brim. Abundance, served in the war zone.

Jesus claimed this psalm's job title for Himself. I am the good shepherd, He said, and He proved the fifth verse on the night He was betrayed, calmly hosting a supper with the enemy's footsteps already in the stairwell. The table before enemies is not a metaphor. It is His signature move. Whatever is standing across from you this week, hostile, unresolved, refusing to leave, notice that it has not stopped Him from setting your place. Sit down. Eat. The Shepherd is not nervous.

Table Questions

  • What does it mean that the table is set in the presence of enemies?
  • Where do you need peace in the middle of pressure right now?
  • How has God provided for you in a hard season?

The Last Sip

Your circumstances do not have to leave the room for your cup to overflow.
