Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 3.

The Pour

Every host knows the small panic of running out. Not enough chairs, not enough food, not enough coffee in the pot when one more car pulls in. Hold that feeling. It is where this story starts.

The Passage

John 2:1-11. A wedding in Cana runs out of wine. At His mother's prompting, Jesus has the servants fill six stone jars with water, and when it is drawn out, it has become wine, better than anything served all night. John calls it the first of His signs.

The Devotion

If you were designing the debut miracle of the Son of God, would you have picked this? Not a healing. Not a storm silenced. A catering problem at a small-town wedding. And yet John says this is where His glory was first revealed, which tells us something about what His glory is like.

Jesus cares about joy. He cares about celebrations that do not collapse in embarrassment, about hosts spared from shame, about parties that get to keep going. The God revealed at Cana is not the joyless auditor so many people fear He is. He is the guest who saves the feast, and He does it quietly, so quietly that only the servants who poured the water knew where the good wine came from.

There is a detail worth sitting with: the jars He used were for ceremonial washing. The containers of religious obligation became the containers of celebration. That is the gospel in six stone jars. Jesus takes what was about keeping clean and turns it into something you drink at a wedding with people you love.

And notice the math. Six jars, twenty to thirty gallons each. When Jesus provides, He is not stingy. Whatever you are running out of this week, patience, hope, money, strength for one more morning, bring the empty jars. Fill them with what you have. He has a habit of turning it into more than the party needs.
