Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 4.
The Pour
There are two kinds of people in every kitchen when guests are over: the one wiping counters mid-conversation, and the one who forgot the counters exist because the conversation got good. This week's passage is about both of them, and Jesus loves both of them.
The Passage
Luke 10:38-42. Martha welcomes Jesus into her home and is pulled in every direction by the preparations. Mary sits at His feet, listening. When Martha asks Jesus to intervene, He answers gently that she is worried about many things, but only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen it.
The Devotion
Be careful not to read this story as a verdict against Martha. Hospitality was her gift, and the meal Jesus ate that day existed because of her hands. Jesus does not rebuke the serving. He names the worry. Martha, Martha, He says, doubling her name the way you do with someone you love who is spiraling. You are anxious about many things.
The problem was never the kitchen. The problem was that the kitchen had swallowed the guest. Martha was working for Jesus in the next room while Mary was actually with Him, and somewhere in the clatter of dishes, service had quietly turned into distraction from the very Person being served.
Most of us do not need convincing that this is our story too. We serve the church, the family, the job, the calendar, and one day we realize we have been busy for God for months without being with Him once. The many things are usually good things. That is what makes them dangerous. Good things make the best distractions.
Jesus's answer is not to cancel the meal. It is to reorder it. One thing is necessary, and it is not the preparations. It is the sitting. Everything Martha was doing would have gone better, and felt lighter, downstream of ten minutes at His feet.
So here is the Thursday assignment, and it is almost embarrassingly simple: before the doing, the sitting. Cup in hand, phone face down, Word open. The counters can wait ten minutes. The One at your table is better than anything coming out of the kitchen.
