Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 5.
The Pour
Look at what is in your hands this morning. A cup, probably. Not much else. Good. This story is for people holding not much else.
The Passage
John 6:1-14. A huge crowd follows Jesus up a mountainside with no dinner plan. Philip runs the numbers and declares the situation impossible. Andrew finds a boy with five barley loaves and two fish, and apologizes for how little it is. Jesus gives thanks, breaks it, and feeds everyone, with twelve baskets left over.
The Devotion
Notice that Jesus asked the question first. He asked Philip where they could buy bread, John says, already knowing what He was going to do. He was not gathering information. He was surfacing the math we all do, the math that says what I have divided by what is needed equals impossible.
Then comes Andrew, half-believing, with the most relatable sentence in the chapter: here is a boy with five loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people? That is most of us. We bring the small thing and apologize for it in the same breath.
But watch what Jesus requires: not more, just what is there. He takes the little, gives thanks for it, and breaks it, and somewhere between the thanks and the breaking, scarcity quietly becomes abundance. The miracle passes through ordinary hands, disciples passing baskets, a kid who gave up his lunch.
Whatever you are looking at this week that does not divide, a budget, a schedule, a reserve of patience that ran out Tuesday, the instruction has not changed. Bring the loaves. Give thanks before the math works. Let Him do the breaking and the multiplying. He has a long record with small lunches.
Table Questions
- What small thing is in your hands right now?
- When has God stretched something you thought was not enough?
- Why did Jesus involve the disciples instead of doing it alone?
The Last Sip
Twelve baskets of leftovers means He did not just cover the need. He embarrassed it.
