Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 6.
The Pour
Every gathering has a guest list, written or not. This week's story is about the person who was not on it, and what Jesus did when she showed up anyway.
The Passage
Luke 7:36-50. Jesus is at dinner in the home of Simon the Pharisee when a woman known in the city as a sinner comes in, weeps at His feet, and anoints them with perfume. Simon silently concludes Jesus must not be a prophet. Jesus answers the thought out loud with a story about two forgiven debts, and tells the woman her sins are forgiven and her faith has saved her.
The Devotion
The scandal in this scene is not the woman. It is the math. Jesus tells Simon about two debtors, one owing a fortune, one owing pocket change, both forgiven. Which will love the moneylender more, He asks. Simon answers correctly and walks straight into the point: the one forgiven more. The woman's extravagance was not the evidence of her shame. It was the evidence of her forgiveness.
Simon offered Jesus a seat but no water, no greeting, no honor. She offered tears, hair, and the most expensive thing she owned. One of them treated dinner with the Son of God as ordinary. The other knew exactly what was happening at that table.
Here is the uncomfortable question the story hands us: our coolness toward Jesus might not be maturity. It might be forgetfulness. People who remember what they were forgiven do not love politely. And the doors of our homes tell the truth about which guest we resemble, the host managing his reputation or the Lord defending the woman everyone else wanted removed.
