Pour Over Thursdays: one cup, one passage, one honest conversation about Jesus. Week 7.

The Pour

Think of the least popular person in your town. The one whose name makes people exhale through their nose. Got them? Jesus just invited Himself to their house for dinner.

The Passage

Luke 19:1-10. Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and a rich man, climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus pass through Jericho. Jesus stops, calls him by name, and announces He must stay at his house today. The crowd grumbles. Zacchaeus responds by giving half his possessions to the poor and repaying anyone he cheated four times over. Jesus declares that salvation has come to that house.

The Devotion

Nobody in Jericho was confused about Zacchaeus. He had gotten rich collecting Rome's taxes from his own neighbors, with a margin for himself. He was a traitor with a nice house, which is why the tree matters. Climbing it was undignified. Curiosity about Jesus will make a man do undignified things, and Jesus notices people in trees.

But here is the order of events, and it is everything: Jesus invited Himself to dinner before Zacchaeus repented, not after. The meal was not the reward for a changed life. It was the cause of one. The crowd grumbled because they believed the table should follow the transformation. Jesus kept proving it works the other way around.

By dessert, a man no sermon had reached was voluntarily giving away half of everything. That is what being wanted does to a person. Somewhere near you is someone who has only ever heard the grumbling. They already know what the town thinks. What they have never experienced is someone looking up into their tree and saying, your table, today, on purpose.
